Reflections from the MEC’s visit with the Dan Tloome Mega Project Community

The MEC Tasneem Motara, together with the Rand West City Local Municipality Mayor William Matsheke’s visit marked an important turning point. The challenges exposed are significant, but the response—a commitment to a structured, accountable, and transparent path forward—is a powerful step toward sustainable success.

The community forum held on October 16, 2025, concerning the Rand West City rural development project, was not a simple meeting—it was a crucial act of civic engagement and a profound learning experience for all stakeholders. While the discussions involved confronting major challenges, the true positive takeaway lies in the commitment to open dialogue and the clarity it provided for the path forward. We reflect on the key learnings and the decisive move toward a structured resolution.

Learnings: This meeting proved that true stakeholder engagement requires an unfiltered hearing. As noted in the follow-up, the commitment is to listen, “raw as it is,” from every block and village.

Takeaway: The community proactively sought a solution by requesting the establishment of a formal, recognized channel for dialogue with the developers and the municipality. This initiative shows a powerful desire for partnership and collaborative problem-solving.

Takeaway: The key core concerns—addressing property damage, fixing the inadequate electricity supply, and providing educational facilities—are now formally identified as the most pressing issues impacting residents and their perception of the project.

Perhaps the most significant development is the commitment to move from discussion to a definitive, formalized Resolution Framework and Action Plan. This is a strategic shift that mandates action and enforces accountability.
