Strengthening Our Co-operatives

The “Strengthening Our Co-operatives: Building Capacity for Sustainable Growth & Impact” workshop held at Maropeng was more than just a training session; it was a three-day intensive bootcamp designed to transform community-driven ideas into financially viable, resilient enterprises.

3 women led Co-Operatives from the Dan Tloome Mega Project community attended with the workshop facilitated by The South African National Apex of Cooperatives Sanaco.

For co-operative leaders, this program delivered a practical roadmap, moving quickly from foundational compliance to securing funding and mastering market access. Here is the crisp, day-by-day summary of the essential skills covered.

🗓️ Day 1: Foundations & Governance

The focus on Day 1 was ensuring co-operatives have a rock-solid base—legally sound and clearly directed. You can’t grow if your roots are weak.

💰 Day 2: Building Strong Systems

Day 2 shifted into the business engine—equipping leaders with the financial and strategic tools needed to run an efficient, profitable co-operative.

• Financial Management Basics: Mastering bookkeeping, budgeting, and implementing financial controls, including a practical cash flow exercise.
• Strategic Planning & Risk: Workshop on conducting a SWOT analysis and setting SMART goals to develop a robust 1-year action plan.
• Marketing & Market Access: Practical advice on branding, digital marketing, and effective strategies for finding buyers.

📈 Day 3: Growth & Sustainability

The final day was dedicated to turning plans into capital and achieving true growth—the ultimate test of resilience.

• Funding & Mobilization: Practical training on Business Plan writing, accessing loans, and essential skills for an effective pitching activity.
• The Pitch Deck Showdown: Co-operatives presented their business plans in a plenary session and received a critique from all participants to strengthen their final proposal.
• Real-World Access: A dedicated case study was presented, illustrating how a co-operative successfully secured key takeaway chains.

This workshop was designed to ensure that when a co-operative faces a challenge—like the R80,000 funding hurdle noted in one of the project case studies—its leaders are equipped not to fail, but to proactively navigate the problem and secure the resources needed for community-changing work.
